Russia has no plan to emerge from the recession without ending the war — economist

Russia has no real chance of stabilizing its economy as long as it continues the war against Ukraine.

This view was expressed by economist Yaroslav Zhalilo in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian", citing data from Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service.

According to the expert, the budget deficit of Russian regions has already reached a 20-year record of 1.5 trillion rubles. Due to a lack of funds, regions are forced to cut social spending, sell assets, and take on new debt. At the same time, Moscow is not reducing its war spending.

The number of large companies with debts to the state has also risen sharply—to 156,000 enterprises.

“I don’t see any way for Russia to emerge from the recession without ending the war,” Zhalilo stated.

He explained why: even after the end of hostilities, sanctions will not be lifted automatically. Europe also demands that Russia acknowledge its responsibility and pay reparations to Ukraine.

And until these conditions are met, Russia will remain increasingly isolated and toxic to the rest of the world, the economist noted.
