Russia struck railway infrastructure in the Kharkiv region: a train station, a depot, and rolling stock were damaged
20 April 11:46
On the night of April 19–20, the Russian army launched strikes against railway infrastructure facilities in the Kharkiv region. The attack damaged rolling stock, depot repair shops, parts of the overhead contact line and power supply systems, as well as the train station building. This was reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to official data, no one was injured as a result of the strike. Restoration work began at the facilities following the shelling.
What happened in the Kharkiv region
Russian troops attacked railway infrastructure facilities in the Kharkiv region overnight. This was not isolated damage, but a strike on several critical components of the system that are essential for train operations, the repair base, and power supply to specific sections.
What exactly was damaged
According to the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development, the attack damaged:
- rolling stock;
- repair shops at the depot;
- contact network components;
- power supply systems;
- the station building.
This means that the attack targeted not only buildings but also the technical infrastructure of the railway, which ensures train operations and the stability of transportation.
The Ministry of Development stated that no one was injured as a result of the nighttime attack.

What is happening after the strike
Repair work is ongoing at the site following the attack.
Government agencies emphasize that railway workers are continuing to quickly repair the infrastructure after the shelling to maintain train traffic across the country.
Why is Russia targeting the railway?
The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development noted that Russia is systematically attacking the Ukrainian railway. According to the ministry, more than 600 attacks have been recorded since the beginning of 2026 alone, resulting in damage to over 1,800 facilities.
These figures show that the railway remains one of the constant targets of Russian strikes. The reason is obvious: in wartime, it is a critical transport system for passenger transport, evacuation, logistics, and freight movement.
Why strikes on stations, depots, and networks are dangerous
The station, depot, overhead contact system, and power supply are the foundation of the railway system. When these specific elements are damaged, there is a risk of disruptions to train operations, repairs to railcars and locomotives, and the stable operation of routes.
Therefore, even in the absence of casualties, such attacks have serious consequences for the region’s transport resilience.
What this means for passengers
As of the time of the Ministry of Information’s announcement, there had been no suspension of rail traffic. Instead, authorities emphasize that infrastructure is being restored promptly, and train service across the country is being maintained without interruption.
