During the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine (URC 2026) in Gdańsk, an international initiative was launched to save St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv, which involves beginning the practical phase of emergency and restoration work and raising approximately 1 million euros to implement the project. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the press service of the Roman Catholic Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv.

According to Maria-Teresa Shibanova, a communications specialist and member of the church’s board of trustees, a series of documents were signed as part of this international collaboration to launch the practical phase of the church’s restoration.

In particular, an agreement was signed between Polimex Mostostal SA and the Parish of St. Nicholas in Kyiv regarding the provision of construction scaffolding and the necessary equipment to carry out priority work at the church. The scaffolding is provided for indefinite use until the restoration is completed, and the Polish side will cover the costs of its manufacture, transportation, and installation.

At the same time, the Ukrainian side is responsible for obtaining the necessary permits for the installation and use of the equipment.

“The total estimated cost of the project, including the manufacture, transportation, and installation of the scaffolding, is approximately 1 million euros,” the statement reads.

In addition, a letter of intent was signed between PZU SA and Polimex Mostostal SA regarding the creation of a steering group for the “Rescue Coalition for St. Nicholas Church in Kyiv” project, which is intended to bring together international partners for the further restoration of the church.

The initiative emphasizes that these agreements are only the first step in the long process of restoring this cultural heritage site and mark the beginning of systematic international cooperation.

“The international support demonstrated at the Ukraine Recovery Conference 2026 confirms that the restoration of Ukraine and the preservation of its cultural heritage are becoming a joint, large-scale project of partners who support its resilience, independence, and future,” the press service emphasized.

The effort to fully restore St. Nicholas Church continues, but one of the most important practical steps has already been taken—moving from intentions to the actual launch of restoration work.
