The Russian occupation forces have suffered approximately 900,000 casualties since the invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
This was reported on social network X by the British Ministry of Defense, citing intelligence data, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
The department notes that Russian troops have probably suffered approximately 900,000 casualties (killed and wounded) since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Of these, 200,000 to 250,000 Russian soldiers are likely to have been killed, the largest Russian losses since World War II.
“Putin and the Russian military leadership are likely to put their goals in the war above the lives of Russian soldiers. They are almost certainly willing to endure continued high casualties if this does not have a negative impact on public or elite support for the war, and if these losses can be replaced,” the British agency believes.
What do analysts say?
Analysts suggest that the Russian dictator and his leadership are likely to place much less value on the lives of Russian citizens belonging to ethnic minorities and living in poor regions, and as a result, Russian mobilization efforts are disproportionately focused on these areas. Russians who are Slavs from urban centers such as Moscow and St. Petersburg have contributed disproportionately fewer troops than their poorer ethnic minority compatriots.
What does the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine report?
According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the total combat losses of Russian troops in manpower from February 24, 2022, to March 20, 2025, amounted to about 899,470 people, including 1,400 occupants killed in the last day.
