8 May 04:35
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran have escalated again in the Persian Gulf. Amid reports of possible negotiations to end the conflict, the two sides exchanged strikes in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran claimed that the U.S. was the first to violate the ceasefire. According to The New York Times, Iran fired missiles and drones at three American destroyers. This was allegedly in response to the attack on an oil tanker heading toward the Strait of Hormuz, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"
What happened in the Persian Gulf
According to Reuters, Iran accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire. Tehran claimed that U.S. forces allegedly attacked two vessels near the Strait of Hormuz, including an Iranian oil tanker. The Iranian side also reported strikes on coastal areas, particularly near Qeshm Island.
The U.S. side presents the events differently. U.S. Central Command stated that Iran attacked three American destroyers with missiles, drones, and small boats as they were passing through the Strait of Hormuz. According to Washington, no American ship was hit.
Following this, the U.S. launched strikes on Qeshm Island, the city of Bandar Abbas, and likely some areas of Tehran. U.S. command asserts that the targets were Iranian military facilities involved in attacks against U.S. forces.

What the U.S. is saying
U.S. Central Command stated that it does not seek escalation but is ready to defend U.S. forces in the region. Washington insists that the response was directed against military facilities that may have been involved in attacks on U.S. forces.
U.S. President Donald Trump confirmed the exchange of fire in the Middle East on social media and stated that American destroyers were not damaged, while Iranian forces suffered another heavy loss.
He once again threatened Iran with unprecedented attacks if the Islamic Republic’s leadership does not quickly sign a peace agreement.
Why the Strait of Hormuz is so important
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the key maritime routes for transporting oil and gas. Any escalation in this region could affect not only the security situation in the Middle East but also global energy markets.
That is why a new exchange of blows between the U.S. and Iran could cause concern among countries that depend on the stability of energy supplies through the Persian Gulf.
