Transavia is canceling some flights in Europe: here’s why

28 April 06:49

Transavia, a Dutch low-cost carrier and part of the Air France-KLM Group, is canceling some flights in May and June due to a sharp rise in the cost of aviation fuel. This applies to the carrier’s French division; Transavia flights from the Netherlands are expected to operate as scheduled. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Transavia.

According to the company, the cuts will affect about 2% of the total flight schedule. Passengers whose flights are canceled will be offered free rebooking, a voucher, or a full refund for their ticket.

Why Transavia is canceling flights

The main reason is the rising cost of aviation fuel amid the war in the Middle East and energy supply issues. Aviation fuel is one of the largest expense items for airlines, so a sharp rise in prices directly affects the schedule and ticket prices.

French media report that Transavia’s flight schedule reductions will continue throughout May and June. This specifically concerns Transavia France, while the company’s Dutch division will continue to fly according to its regular schedule.

How many flights will be canceled

According to the carrier, cancellations will account for about 2% of the schedule. This is not a complete suspension of flights, but a partial reduction of the schedule for the next two months.

Passengers affected by the changes will have several options:

  • rebook their ticket for free;
  • receive a voucher;
  • receive a full refund of the ticket price.

Transavia emphasizes that these measures apply specifically to the flights that will be subject to the reduction.

Ticket prices have already gone up

Amid rising fuel costs, Transavia has already raised ticket prices. The average price increase is about 10 euros for a round-trip flight.

Other European airlines are taking similar steps, as the rise in jet fuel prices is affecting the entire market. According to Reuters, the rise in fuel prices following the escalation around Iran has already increased costs for long-haul flights from Europe by more than $100 per passenger, and for intra-European flights by approximately €29.

KLM has also cut back on certain flights

Transavia is not the only carrier forced to respond to the fuel crisis. Earlier, KLM announced the reduction of certain flights in Europe, particularly on routes to London and Düsseldorf.

Although Transavia France and Transavia Netherlands are part of the Air France-KLM group, they operate as separate divisions. That is why the decision to cancel flights currently applies only to the French arm of the carrier.

Why the fuel crisis is hitting European aviation

European airlines are entering the summer season with high fuel costs and risks to supply stability. The situation is influenced by the war in the Middle East, tensions surrounding energy routes, and the general rise in the cost of oil and jet fuel.

According to international media reports, European airlines have already begun revising schedules, cutting some flights, or factoring additional costs into ticket prices. In particular, Lufthansa announced a large-scale reduction in short-haul flights to save fuel.

What Passengers Should Do

Passengers holding Transavia France tickets for May or June should check their flight status on the airline’s website or in emails from the carrier. If a flight is canceled, the company must offer an alternative: rebooking, a voucher, or a refund.

It’s also worth noting that due to the general rise in aviation fuel prices, ticket prices in Europe may continue to rise, especially during the peak summer season.
