There are no prerequisites for ending the war in 2026, said Viktor Sobolev, a member of the Russian State Duma’s Defense Committee and a reserve lieutenant general . This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Russian propaganda media.
“We must achieve the objective of the military operation. In my opinion, that means reaching Ukraine’s western borders. The range of drones is increasing, and the security zone for which our troops are currently pushing back the border will not be sufficient. Europe is not allowing us to live in peace. If we agree to any kind of ceasefire now, we are doomed to a more terrible and bloodier war a year from now,” Sobolev said.
According to Bloomberg, dictator Vladimir Putin’s position on a possible resolution to the war has shifted over the summer: the Russian side no longer considers returning part of the occupied territories to Ukraine as part of a ceasefire agreement.

Moscow intends to retain control over territories in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions as a buffer zone, while Putin seeks to establish full control over the Donbas and believes that negotiations can resume only after this goal is achieved.

Trump has repeatedly spoken of the need to end the war through diplomatic means. According to him, Putin and Zelenskyy are interested in ending the war, and a negotiated solution could be reached in the near future.
