5G Is Coming to Kyiv: When Might the New Technology Be Available?

Fifth-generation mobile communications may soon be available in Kyiv. According to promotional materials from Kyivstar, the launch of a 5G test network in Kyiv is scheduled for July 21, 2026. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing the industry-specific telecom community MZU.
There has been no official confirmation of this exact date from Kyivstar’s press office yet, but the company’s advertising banners indicate that the capital region will be the next stage following regional trials. Additionally, according to preliminary plans, the technology is expected to be rolled out in Odesa by the end of 2026.
5G Testing in Ukraine
The first 5G pilot zones in Ukraine began operating in early 2026. Currently, limited testing at designated locations is underway in three cities:
- Lviv;
- Kharkiv;
- Borodianka (Kyiv Oblast).
In these zones, subscribers whose smartphones support the 5G standard can connect to the network and test its performance in test mode.
Key Advantages of 5G Over 4G
Fifth-generation mobile communications differs from the current LTE standard in several key ways:
- Speed: The theoretical data transfer speed in 5G networks can exceed 10 Gbit/s, which is dozens of times faster than 4G.
- Minimal latency: Significantly lower ping (signal delay) is critical for the development of telemedicine, online gaming, cloud services, and the control of unmanned vehicles.
- Network Capacity: The new technology is capable of simultaneously supporting a much larger number of connected devices per square kilometer without compromising connection quality. This is the foundation for the development of “smart city” infrastructure and the Internet of Things (IoT).
According to the Ministry of Digital Transformation of Ukraine, at this stage, the focus is exclusively on local pilot projects to ensure equipment compatibility. A full-scale commercial launch and nationwide rollout of 5G networks across the country will take place only after martial law is lifted and all security conditions related to the use of radio frequencies are met.
