Public transportation fares in Kyiv are set to rise: the Kyiv City State Administration has announced the new rates

18 May 16:42

Starting July 15, the fare for public transportation in Kyiv will nearly quadruple—a single ride will cost 30 hryvnias, according to the Kyiv City State Administration, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

“In Kyiv, there is a proposal to set the cost of a single ride on public transit at 30 hryvnias. At the same time, a discount system for travel passes is planned for passengers who regularly use public transit,” the statement said.

Currently, a single trip on the metro, trolleybus, tram, or bus costs 8 hryvnias.

The need to update the fare is explained by the need to bring it closer to an economically justified level. Due to rising costs for electricity, fuel, labor, and infrastructure maintenance, as well as a decline in ridership, current fares are outdated.

“According to calculations by transportation companies, the economically justified fare for 2026 is 64.60 hryvnias per metro ride and 44.14 hryvnias for ground-based public transportation,” the statement reads.

The Kyiv City State Administration notes that the current fare in Kyiv remains one of the lowest among Ukraine’s major cities.

The authorities specify that for passengers who regularly use public transportation, discounts will apply depending on the number of trips purchased on a transit card:

▪️ 1–9 trips — 30 UAH

▪️ 10–19 — 28.90 UAH

▪️ 20–29 — 27.80 UAH

▪️ 30–39 — 26.60 UAH

▪️ 40–49 — 25.50 UAH

▪️ 50 trips — 25 UAH

Currently, when purchasing a 50-trip pass, the cost is 6.50 UAH.

When purchasing monthly passes, the cost of a single trip will be approximately 23.3–23.6 hryvnias, according to the Kyiv City State Administration. Students will pay 50% of the cost of a monthly pass. Schoolchildren will use public transportation for free during the school year and with a 75% discount in the summer.

“Separately, there are plans to introduce a transfer ticket for 60 hryvnias, which will allow unlimited transfers between the metro and surface transportation within 90 minutes,” the Kyiv authorities’ statement notes.

The new fares are scheduled to take effect on July 15, 2026, following the completion of regulatory procedures, as well as consultations with the public and labor unions. The last time fares in the capital were revised was in 2018.

Trips purchased on a transit card before July 14, 2026, will remain valid until September 14, 2026.

As a reminder, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko instructed the departments of the Kyiv City State Administration in early April to “prepare calculations based on an economic justification for revising public transportation fares in the capital.”

“Rising costs of fuel, electricity, consumables, and logistics are forcing city authorities to bring fares closer to an economically justified level,” the mayor wrote in a Telegram post on April 7.

He noted that Kyiv’s public transport system is subsidized, with expenses for 2026 reaching 12 billion hryvnias.

Where else have fares increased

As a reminder, in Lviv, fares for all public transportation will change starting May 16: they will increase by 20–35%.

Public transportation fares will be as follows:

  • 11.5 UAH when paying with a LeoCard for students;
  • when paying with the app or a standard LeoCard – 23 UAH;
  • when paying with a bank card or NFC-enabled phone – 26 UAH;
  • when paying with cash – 30 UAH.

The cost of luggage transport when paying by card is 23 UAH, and when paying in cash – 30 UAH.

A student pass for all modes of transport will cost 575 UAH, and a general pass for all modes of transport – 1,150 UAH.

The increase in fare prices in Lviv was justified by rising fuel costs.
