Latvia introduces paid border crossing with Russia and Belarus

15 October 14:24

On October 15, Latvia launched a paid electronic queue system for crossing the country’s external border with Russia and Belarus.

This is reported on the Latvian website of the State Customs Committee of Latvia, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The introduction of a paid electronic queue is aimed at improving border crossing security and preventing traffic congestion. The new system will operate at the Grebneva, Terekhova, and Paternijeki border crossing points.

How it will work

According to the established rules, drivers must register in advance in the online booking system before arriving at the border, indicating the checkpoint, date, time and type of queue. The reservation fee for one vehicle is 9.3 euros.

Registration in the electronic queue was opened on October 1. Starting October 15, crossing the Latvian border in a live queue will not be available.

Latvia tightens rules for entry of foreigners

On September 1, Latvia introduced new entry rules for foreigners, including citizens of Ukraine, Russia and other countries that are not members of the EU, NATO, OECD, Switzerland or Brazil.

Starting from September 1, Latvia has obliged third-country nationals, including Ukrainians, to submit an online application at eta.gov.lv at least 48 hours before entry. This also applies to transit travel.

The application form must indicate the purpose of the trip, duration of stay, route, place of residence, as well as information about service in government agencies or participation in elections (of yourself or your relatives). Only the person submitting the form should submit it, not someone on his or her behalf.

After filling out the form, a confirmation is automatically sent by e-mail, and there is no need to wait for a separate authorization. However, the absence of the form may result in a fine of up to €2000.

At the same time, checks can be carried out not only at the border but also within the country if security authorities identify potential threats.
