The topic of possible elections and the end of the current convocation of the parliament is being discussed more and more actively on the sidelines of the parliament. Several MPs have publicly stated that the work of the Verkhovna Rada of the IX convocation is likely to end.
They even mentioned the dates of possible parliamentary elections. It is possible that in 2026, Ukraine may get a new composition of the Verkhovna Rada. Politicians attribute this to both the security situation and the expectations of society, which, in their words, is tired of political uncertainty. Could the spring of 2026 really be the time for new elections in Ukraine? Read more in the article by "Komersant Ukrainian".
Discussions about possible elections are already underway on the sidelines of the Verkhovna Rada. MP from the Servant of the People party Georgiy Mazurashu said this on the Apostrophe TV channel. The MP noted that the likelihood of holding elections by the end of this year is very low due to the lack of proper security conditions. At the same time, he does not rule out that elections may be held as early as 2026 even without the lifting of martial law.
“But the fact that elections may be held next spring even without the lifting of martial law – it is unlikely that we will be able to return peace to Ukraine reliably and with security guarantees by that time – is being discussed behind the scenes,” Mazurashu added.
According to Mazurashu, there is an increasingly common opinion among his colleagues that society is tired of the current political situation. He himself calls on MPs to work as expected by voters instead of looking for easier ways out of the crisis.
“It is easier to hold elections than to work as those who elected us want us to. Unfortunately, this is what prevails in the Verkhovna Rada,” said Mazurash.
MP from the Servant of the People party, Heorhiy Mazurashu, also confirmed that the faction had met with the President of Ukraine.
“We had a meeting with the President. The leitmotif was that our President is determined to fight to the last,” Mazurashu said.
“The countdown is on for weeks”: MPs predict the end of the IX convocation
Ukrainian MP Dmytro Chornyi said that the current term of the Verkhovna Rada is coming to an end, and the country may get a new parliament next year.
“The countdown has been going on for weeks. Of course, I may be wrong, but I have a feeling that this term of the Verkhovna Rada is coming to an end and we are working our last, if not the last, then definitely the penultimate session. Next year, the country will probably have a new parliament. And this is closely intertwined with the issue of ending the war,” Chornyi wrote.
He emphasized that in the near future the Verkhovna Rada expects “clear instructions and guidelines” from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as the remaining time should be used efficiently and productively.
As a reminder, the local elections that were supposed to take place on the last Sunday of October 2025 will not be held due to martial law. This was announced by the Central Election Commission in its official statement. The CEC reminded that the Verkhovna Rada was supposed to set the election date no later than 90 days before the election day. However, the parliament did not make a corresponding decision.
“In connection with the full-scale armed aggression of the Russian Federation, martial law has been introduced in Ukraine, during which no elections are organized or held. Therefore, the decision to call regular local elections was not made by the Parliament,” the CEC said in a statement.
The commission also noted that under these conditions, there are no grounds for nominating candidates to regional, district, city, village and settlement territorial election commissions. At the same time, no new composition of district and city election commissions responsible for preparing and organizing local elections will be formed.
As a reminder, on July 25, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a law extending martial law and mobilization for another 90 days – until November 5, 2025.
