Hungary blocks the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU

Hungary has blocked the adoption of a final statement on Ukraine by the EU summit. The main point of the document was a paragraph supporting the start of negotiations on Ukraine’s accession to the EU. This was reported by the European Council, "Komersant Ukrainian" informs

The draft final statement was supported by 26 of the 27 EU countries. The EU states will return to discussing Ukraine’s European integration in October.

Before the summit, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said that according to a poll conducted in the country, 95% of Hungarians opposed Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

The EU Council may penalize Hungary for restricting democracy and not adhering to the values of the European Union. Next week, the ministers will discuss whether Budapest violated one of the main articles of the EU Treaty when it blocked Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Hungary could be deprived of its voting rights.

However, the EU Council’s decision must be unanimous, meaning that all EU member states must support it. The hearing is scheduled for Tuesday. However, we can already predict that there will be no unanimity. It is unlikely that Hungary’s political friends and allies will support the deprivation of its voting rights. For example, Slovakia. And the disagreement of one country is enough to block the decision.
