The Assumption Cathedral of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was damaged in a Russian attack

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported a fire that broke out on the roof of the Assumption Cathedral at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra as a result of shelling by Russian occupiers on the night of Monday, June 15, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“A fire has broken out on the grounds of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra. The fire is on the roof of the Assumption Cathedral,” Klitschko wrote on Telegram.

Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration (KCMA), reported that, according to preliminary data, the fire at the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra was caused by a direct hit.

“We are currently assessing the extent of the damage caused by the Russians. Measures are being taken to contain the fire in accordance with safety protocols. We are dealing with such a Russian aggressor…,” he wrote on Telegram.

Deputy Prime Minister for Humanitarian Policy Tetiana Berezhna also commented on the enemy strike on the Lavra.

“Very difficult news. Russia has attacked the territory of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most significant spiritual and cultural monuments of Ukraine and the world,” the message reads.

Meanwhile, Bishop Avraam wrote on his Facebook page that following the Russian Federation’s nighttime attack on the Lavra, an emergency evacuation of sacred relics and liturgical items was organized. These included ancient icons, antiminsia, and other valuables.

Tetyana Berezhna clarified that the Russians damaged the Assumption Cathedral. Currently, relevant services are taking measures to contain the damage in accordance with safety protocols. Afterward, it will be possible to assess the extent of the damage.

Thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Lavra’s monastic community, all those involved, as well as the selfless work of rescue workers and fire departments, it was possible to minimize the threat to people and preserve the sacred sites.
