Poland has initiated health monitoring of a person who may have come into contact with a passenger on the cruise ship MV Hondius, where an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus was reported. This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, citing Polish media, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Condition of the person under observation

According to media reports, based on data from Poland’s Chief Sanitary Inspectorate, the person under monitoring currently shows no symptoms of the disease. Their condition will be monitored for seven days.

Health authorities have launched an investigation to identify other individuals who may have come into contact with the ship’s passengers after they disembarked.

It is known that there is one Polish citizen on board the ship, which is currently heading to the Canary Islands—the ship’s captain.

Deaths on board

Three people have already died from the infection on the cruise shipa couple from the Netherlands and a German citizen.

Several other passengers who disembarked on the islands of Saint Helena and Tristan da Cunha in late April are also suspected of being infected.

What is known about hantavirus

Hantaviruses are zoonotic infections transmitted to humans by rodents (mice, rats, voles).

Infection occurs through inhalation of air contaminated with secretions from infected animals or through contact with broken skin.

According to the WHO, between 10,000 and 100,000 cases are reported worldwide each year. In Europe, the virus most often causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome.

The situation surrounding the hantavirus outbreak

It should be noted that all passengers on the cruise ship MV Hondius are considered to have been in contact with infected individuals, which is why every passenger is subject to mandatory testing.

On the morning of May 10, the cruise ship arrived at the port on the Spanish island of Tenerife. Spanish medical specialists immediately boarded the ship to conduct a final health screening, the results of which will determine whether passengers will be allowed to disembark.

Additionally, due to the threat of the infection spreading, Britain deployed military medics to the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha for the first time in history.

The emergency operation was necessary to assist a British citizen who had previously been on board the ship and is exhibiting symptoms characteristic of the deadly hantavirus.
