Ukraine has updated its household waste management rules: key changes

4 January 15:18

The government has supported changes to the rules for providing household waste management services. The document was prepared taking into account community practices and European standards.

This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

It is noted that the changes are aimed at improving the mechanisms for providing waste management services, ensuring consumer protection and unifying approaches to determining the volume and cost of services.

What does this mean in practice?

In particular, the amendments provide for updating the rules for providing the service to take into account various waste collection systems, including the containerless system and waste collection at the request of the consumer.

It also establishes requirements for the labeling of packages and a list of information that local governments and contractors must provide when using such systems.

The procedure for managing greenery waste – branches, leaves, grass clippings – as well as the collection of hazardous waste as part of household waste is regulated separately.

The mechanism for determining consumption rates and service volumes is clarified, which will allow for unification of local practices.

In addition, the law defines the consumer’s right to not pay the cost of the service in case of his temporary absence for more than 30 calendar days. To do so, the consumer will need to apply to the service provider, who, in turn, will have to make the appropriate recalculations.
