Diesel prices are falling in Ukraine: what we know

8 May 12:26

Diesel fuel prices fell by 1.2 hryvnia on Friday, May 8, while gasoline and natural gas prices remained stable, according to data from the “Energoreforma” web portal, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" citing “Interfax-Ukraine.

According to the report, Ukrnafta and UPG reduced their diesel prices by 1 UAH/liter today, while OKKO and WOG cut theirs by 2 UAH/liter. Socar and Parallel have maintained their prices for now.

Gasoline and gas prices have not changed, with the exception of “Ukrnafta,” which once again aligned the price of premium A-95 with that of regular gasoline over the weekend.

According to Serhiy Kuyun, director of the consulting firm A-95, prices will continue to fall.

“I think there’s more to come. Tomorrow, wholesale shipments of diesel fuel will begin at 74 UAH/L, which corresponds to 80–82 UAH/L at gas stations within 7–10 days. For reference: yesterday (Thursday – IF-U), the average price for diesel was 89 UAH/liter. The reason remains the same as always – a shift in the global market,” Kuyun wrote on Facebook on Friday.

According to him, the price will fall as quickly as the situation allows, but he believes the market is striving to return to previous prices, specifically 60 UAH/liter, or better yet—lower, because sales are much stronger at those levels.

Kuyun noted that PJSC Ukrnafta’s 1.5-fold increase in sales volume during the crisis and its rise to first place based on April results means a loss of volume for other chains, so “the battle for every liter will be even fiercer.”

“This is the key to ensuring prices drop as quickly as possible,” concluded the director of A-95.

Vladimir Omelchenko, director of energy and infrastructure programs at the Razumkov Center, also supported these positive forecasts to some extent.

“After all, the situation in the Strait of Hormuz has not yet been resolved, so risks remain, but the trend for consumers is positive. It is important to monitor the market situation so that consumers have an objective picture and retailers pursue a balanced pricing policy. The best thing for consumers is increased competition, which we have been observing recently,” he wrote in the comments on Kuyun’s post.
