Mercedes is recalling nearly 150,000 vehicles in the U.S.: what’s the issue?

8 May 13:11

The German automaker Mercedes-Benz plans to recall more than 144,049 vehicles in the United States. This was reported by Reuters, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The vehicles are being recalled due to issues with a blank instrument panel display. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced this on Friday.

“The infotainment system control unit, which is responsible for navigation and multimedia functions, may reset while the vehicle is in motion, causing the instrument panel display to go blank,” the regulator said.

NHTSA added that dealers will update the infotainment system control unit’s software free of charge.

Other Mercedes-Benz recalls in the U.S.

Just last April, Mercedes-Benz announced it was recalling 24,092 vehicles in the U.S. due to a defective universal joint, which in some cases could lead to sudden loss of traction without warning. The recall is part of NHTSA campaign 26V216, and the issue affects 2018–2020 4MATIC all-wheel-drive models. According to the report, some vehicles may experience increased wear on the universal joint of the driveshaft. This can lead to oil loss and, subsequently, joint failure. In such a case, the connection between the transfer case and the front axle may be disrupted, causing a loss of drive while driving and increasing the risk of an accident. Mercedes-Benz cites insufficient manufacturing standards at the supplier as the cause.

What symptoms may appear before a failure

Mercedes-Benz notes that before a malfunction occurs, the driver may hear unusual noises or feel vibrations while driving. At the same time, the report specifically states that in some cases, such warning signs may not be present. That is why the company decided to conduct a voluntary recall. The campaign covers models manufactured between 2018 and 2020.

According to the company, authorized dealers are to inspect the driveshaft on the recalled vehicles and replace it free of charge if necessary. The report also states that owners should receive letters by June 2, 2026. You can check for a recall using the VIN on the official Mercedes-Benz USA website.

Additionally, Mercedes-Benz previously announced a recall of all G580 SUVs in the U.S. equipped with EQ technology from the 2025 model year due to a potential risk of wheels detaching while driving.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the current wheel mounting bolts could “allow a wheel to loosen or detach from the vehicle.” The recall affects 3,734 vehicles.

“The report states that the bolts ‘were not adapted to the increased weight of the vehicle and the higher torsional loads characteristic of the electric version of the model,'” the publication reports.

According to NHTSA data, Mercedes-Benz used the same wheel assemblies and mounting bolts as in other G-Class vehicles; however, the company’s analysis, conducted from September 2024 to January 2025, confirmed the risk of them loosening during repeated trips over rough terrain and wheel changes.

Although the likelihood of the problem occurring under normal operating conditions is considered low, the manufacturer decided not to rule out the possibility of a hazard.

“U.S. owners of the 2025 G580 electric vehicles, which start at approximately $160,000, should contact authorized Mercedes-Benz dealers, where the bolts will be replaced free of charge. Notifications regarding this will begin to be sent out in late May,” the statement said.

Earlier, Mercedes-Benz reported a sharp drop in operating profit at the start of 2026, a year expected to bring rising raw material costs and further tariff pressures that will weigh on the German automaker as it updates its model lineup to boost sales.

The conflict in the Middle East has led to rising global industrial costs, intensifying pressure on European automakers already suffering from high U.S. import tariffs.

Mercedes-Benz Cars Group— one of the most popular manufacturers of premium cars and engines—is part of Daimler AG and the so-called “Big Three” of German automakers (along with Audi and BMW). Mercedes-Benz was founded in 1926. Its headquarters are located in Stuttgart, Germany.
