Tomato prices continue to fall in Ukraine: key factors

2 May 14:18

This week, the downward trend in prices on the Ukrainian greenhouse tomato market continues, according to analysts from the EastFruit project, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

This situation is due to increased harvest volumes at greenhouse farms across virtually the entire country, as well as a decline in demand in this segment. In addition, stable vegetable supplies from abroad continue to put additional pressure on prices.

Currently, local greenhouse complexes are offering tomatoes at prices ranging from 130 to 160 UAH/kg ($2.95–3.63/kg), which is on average 10% cheaper than at the end of last week.

According to market participants, the supply of domestic produce is gradually increasing. With each passing day, more and more Ukrainian stationary greenhouse complexes are entering the active phase of selling this produce.

At the same time, despite the current price decline, greenhouse tomatoes from Ukrainian farms are currently, on average, 73% more expensive than during the same period last year. However, most market operators do not rule out further price declines in this segment. According to producers, if current sales rates persist, they will be forced to continue lowering prices to prevent unsold produce from piling up in warehouses.
