Calls in Ukraine to Ban Turkish TV Series: What the Petitioner Is Proposing

21 June 18:12

In Ukraine, there is a proposal to restrict the broadcast of Turkish TV series and increase support for the national film industry, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

In an appeal to the Cabinet of Ministers, the petition’s initiator proposes revising the approach to shaping television programming in Ukraine and reducing the share of foreign TV series, particularly those produced in Turkey. The initiative is justified by the need to support the Ukrainian film industry, develop national cultural products, and strengthen informational resilience amid the war.

The idea of restricting the broadcast of Turkish TV series in Ukraine

Petition No. 41/010118-26ep was submitted to the government requesting that it consider restricting the broadcast of Turkish TV series on Ukrainian television channels and media platforms.

The document notes that a significant portion of television airtime is currently filled with foreign series, primarily those produced in Turkey. According to the author, this reduces demand for Ukrainian series, films, and television projects, which negatively impacts the development of the national film industry and cultural landscape.

Arguments: Development of Ukrainian Media Content

The petition emphasizes that, given the state of martial law and the need to strengthen national identity, the state must create favorable conditions for the development of its own media production.

The author also underscores the importance of supporting Ukrainian directors, screenwriters, actors, and producers, and proposes directing revenue from advertising and content distribution toward the development of national cultural products.

Proposed Measures

The petitioner proposes:

  1. Establish quotas for the broadcast of Ukrainian TV series.
  2. Provide additional state support for the production of Ukrainian TV series and films.
  3. Limit the share of foreign TV series content in television broadcasting.
  4. Promote Ukrainian cultural and historical projects.

There are 86 days left until the end of the signature collection period. Currently, there are 33 signatures. To have the initiative considered, 25,000 signatures must be collected.
