An innovative tourniquet with clinically proven effectiveness has been developed in Ukraine — Amalyan

The war has forced Ukrainian medical professionals and manufacturers to seek new solutions to save the wounded. One such innovation is the COR-Ex tourniquet—a new cord-type hemostatic device which, according to its developers, is the only product of its kind in Ukraine that has received medical certification and undergone clinical trials. Tigran Amalyan, one of the tourniquet’s developers—a doctor and entrepreneur—spoke about this in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to Amalyan, the idea to create his own tourniquet came about after he, as a medical equipment supplier, personally tested all types of hemostatic tourniquets available on the Ukrainian market.
“Since I was a supplier of medical equipment and consumables, we purchased every type of tourniquet available on the market—absolutely every single one. There were 20 of them. And, excuse me, but I believe that none of them can be used sensibly at all,” the entrepreneur said.
After that, Amalyan, together with a team of doctors, developed his own product, setting a clear technical goal for himself: to create a device that could be used quickly even in field conditions, without outside assistance. As someone who worked as a cardiac surgeon for many years and saw firsthand every day just how critical every second is during massive bleeding, Amalyan sought to create a product that was as simple and effective as possible—one that could be applied quickly even in a stressful situation.
During the interview, Amalyan also demonstrated how the tourniquet works. According to him, once applied correctly, the bleeding stops almost instantly.
“A few seconds—and that’s it, the bleeding has already stopped,” he emphasized.
The entrepreneur cited the ability to apply his tourniquet over clothing—without wasting precious time on additional steps—as the key difference between his product and similar ones; this is particularly important on the battlefield or when providing first aid to civilians.
Amalyan is convinced that modern medical products must undergo comprehensive efficacy testing before they reach the market. That is why his team has focused on clinical trials, medical certification, and collaboration with practicing physicians.
“This is the only product in the world that has medical certification. It is also, by the way, the only tourniquet (of the cord-type design in Ukraine—Ed.) that has undergone clinical trials,” Amalyan concluded.
In his view, the development of Ukrainian medical technologies today is of strategic importance not only for military medicine but also for the civilian healthcare system, as modern solutions can save lives both during combat operations and in everyday practice.
