3G shutdown in Ukraine: what will change for users
8 January 2025 15:21
The shutdown of the 3G network in Ukraine will be gradual, and mobile operators will inform subscribers in advance about the disconnection. This was reported by the National Commission for the State Regulation of Electronic Communications, Radio Frequency Spectrum and Postal Services, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.
It is noted that mobile operators in Ukraine are currently testing the transition from 3G to 4G technology in a number of settlements.
“The test results are positive. The transition process involves both providing better 4G coverage and facilitating the transition for subscribers. How long it will take depends not only on operators but also on subscribers. The process will be gradual, and everyone will be properly informed in advance. No one will be left without communication,” the NCCC emphasizes.
What will change for people who use old push-button phones?
The regulator emphasized that for users of push-button phones served by the 2G network, the 3G shutdown will not affect the ability to make calls and send/receive SMS. In addition, people living in areas with a 3G signal will not lose access to the Internet, as the 3G network will only be replaced by 4G.
The NCCC noted that until 4G coverage is rolled out where it does not exist, mobile operators will not disconnect the 3G network.
If the SIM card does not support 4G, what to do
Users whose SIM cards do not support 4G can contact the operators’ customer service centers. The replacement will be free of charge, and the phone number will remain unchanged.
Mobile operators will offer discounts on new devices and roll out special customer support programs for users whose phones do not support 4G and cannot afford to buy a new one.
“3G technology remains the current data transmission technology. The strategy and the beginning of 3G phase-out will be gradually applied by operators. In this case, we are talking about three mobile operators that can use any technology within their technology-neutral licenses as long as they provide quality service to their subscribers. Important. The transition from 3G to 4G networks is primarily about improving communication for users,” the NCCC noted.
We would like to add that the shutdown of 3G will not affect calls, SMS and other basic services, but users are advised to switch to 4G for high-speed Internet now to avoid possible inconveniences in the future.
