Probably, presbyopia is no longer a problem – revolutionary drops have been approved in the United States

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of Vizz 1.44% eye drops (aceclidine solution) for the treatment of presbyopia (farsightedness) in adults. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to Medical Xpress.

Vizz is the first and only acetylidine-based eye drops that help improve near vision in adults with presbyopia. This medication constricts the pupil muscle of the eye, creating a so-called “pinhole” effect. As a result, the pupil becomes smaller than 2 mm, which allows for better focus on close objects without impairing distance vision.

The approval is based on the results of three phases of clinical trials. The first two studies involved 466 people who used the drops once a day for 42 days. The third evaluated the safety of the drug over six months in 217 participants who also used the drops daily.

In all studies, Vizz showed an improvement in near vision within 30 minutes of application, with the effect lasting up to 10 hours. No serious side effects related to the drug were recorded during the entire study period (30,000 days of use). The most common adverse reactions, which were usually mild and resolved quickly, included irritation at the injection site, blurred vision, and headache.

“This FDA approval changes the way we treat millions of people who struggle with age-related near vision loss. I believe this will be a welcome solution for ophthalmologists to offer an effective presbyopia treatment that could become the new standard of care and meet the needs of our patients,”

– said Mark Blumenstein, a researcher at the Schwartz Center for Laser Vision Correction in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Vizz was approved by LENZ Therapeutics.

What is presbyopia?

Farsightedness, or presbyopia, is an age-related visual impairment that makes it difficult for a person to focus on objects in the vicinity, such as when reading or working with small details. It usually begins to manifest itself after the age of 40 and is associated with the natural aging of the eye lens, which loses its elasticity and ability to change shape for clear vision at close range. Presbyopia is not a disease, but a natural process that affects almost all people as they age.

Symptoms of presbyopia include difficulty reading small print, the need to move text further away from the eyes, eye fatigue, or headaches after working up close for a long time. To correct farsightedness, reading glasses, bifocal or progressive lenses, and contact lenses are commonly used. In some cases, surgical methods are used, such as laser correction or implantation of special lenses.
