To save money: Ukrainian farmers are choosing domestic garlic varieties
7 June 20:03
Garlic growers are increasingly turning to Ukrainian varieties to reduce the cost of planting material. Vasyl Gontaruk, a farmer from the Vinnytsia region, wrote about this in an article for the magazine *Plantator*. Reports "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to AgroTimes.
According to him, imported seeds and the constant renewal of planting material remain among the largest expenses in garlic farming. That is why the farm works primarily with Ukrainian varieties and reproduces seeds on its own.
“Yes, they may yield less consistent results, but you produce your own planting material. And that’s a significant cost savings,” the farmer explained.
To improve seed health, the farm uses air-dried bulbs, which help reduce the accumulation of diseases in the planting material.
