Zelenskyy declared a ceasefire and set a condition for Russia

Ukraine is declaring a ceasefire starting at midnight on the night of May 5–6. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made this announcement following Russia’s statements regarding a brief “ceasefire” on May 8–9, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Zelensky emphasized that human life is more important than any anniversary celebrations, and called on the Russian leadership to move from statements to concrete steps to end the war.

What Zelenskyy said

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has not received any official proposals from Russia regarding the terms for ceasing hostilities, despite claims circulating on Russian social media and in the media.

“To date, there has been no official communication to Ukraine regarding the terms for ending hostilities, as claimed on Russian social media. We believe that human life is of incomparably greater value than the ‘celebration’ of any anniversary. In this regard, we are announcing a ceasefire, effective from 12:00 a.m. on the night of May 5–6,” Zelenskyy stated.

According to the president, there is sufficient time until that moment to ensure a genuine ceasefire.

“We will respond in kind starting at that time. The time has come for Russian leaders to take real steps to end their war,” Zelenskyy emphasized.

What Russia said beforehand

Prior to Zelenskyy’s statement, Russia announced a unilateral “ceasefire” for May 8–9, citing the anniversary of the end of World War II.

At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defense threatened Ukraine with a massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv in the event of attempts to “disrupt” the celebrations in Moscow.

According to the statement, Russia will “take all necessary measures” to ensure the safety of the parade in Moscow.

It also urged Kyiv residents and staff of foreign diplomatic missions to “leave the city in a timely manner.”
