There Will Be No Postwar “Baby Boom”: A Demographer Explains Why the Ukrainian Population Won’t Grow

Once the war ends, Ukraine is not expected to see a sharp rise in the birth rate. Alexander Gladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography, made this statement in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
When asked whether a “baby boom” is possible after the war, the researcher replied briefly:
“No. Absolutely not.”
According to the demographer, only a slight increase in the birth rate is possible after the war—mainly because some families postponed having children during the hostilities.
“There may be a certain compensatory increase, but it will most likely not be very large,” he explained.
Hladun noted that in order to halt the country’s population decline, 100 women would need to give birth to approximately 210–220 children. Today, however, this figure is significantly lower both in Ukraine and in most countries around the world.
He also pointed out that Ukrainian families are gradually shifting from a two-child model to a one-child model.
Among the reasons for this trend, the demographer cited low incomes, housing problems, and a shortage of kindergartens and daycare centers that would allow parents to balance work and child-rearing.
