Migration has the most significant impact on Ukraine’s declining population. Oleksandr Gladun, deputy director of the Institute of Demography, made this statement in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

“If we were to assess which demographic factor has the greatest impact on our population size, migration would rank first,” he emphasized.

The demographer noted that the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees estimates the number of Ukrainians currently living abroad at approximately 6 million.

At the same time, Gladun noted that these statistics do not include Ukrainians who, after the start of the full-scale war, traveled through Russian territory or the temporarily occupied Crimea and from there made their way to European countries.

“Furthermore, even before February 24, 2022, about 900,000 Ukrainians held residence permits in European Union countries for work or study. They are also effectively not included in pre-war demographic estimates,” says Gladun.

Furthermore, citing data from the State Border Guard Service, the demographer noted that since the start of the full-scale war, the net migration loss has amounted to approximately 3.3 million people.

“It will only be possible to conduct an accurate census one or two years after the war ends, once migration patterns have stabilized,” he concluded.
