Heating utility’s gas debts are jeopardizing the heating season, says Popenko

The natural gas debt of heating and power companies has reached 80–90 billion hryvnia, which could negatively impact preparations for the upcoming heating season.

This was stated by Oleg Popenko, head of the Union of Utility Consumers, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the expert, the situation in the utilities sector remains difficult, and key problems that have accumulated in recent years remain unresolved.

“I am not entirely convinced that the situation at heating and power companies in Ukraine has changed dramatically between February and May. As we can see, the situation there has not changed at all. Huge debts, frozen accounts,” said Popenko.

He emphasized that the financial problems of utility companies directly affect their ability to prepare for the fall-winter period.

“The debts of water utilities amount to about 15 billion hryvnias for electricity alone. And the heating and power companies’ gas debts are estimated at 80–90 billion. And this directly affects preparations for the fall-winter period,” he noted.

Popenko also expressed skepticism regarding optimistic forecasts regarding the readiness of energy and utility infrastructure for the coming winter.
