Europe is building a missile defense shield: Ukraine has joined a new coalition of 10 countries
14 July 00:16
Ukraine, along with nine European countries, has announced the creation of the Integrated Anti-Ballistic Missile Defense Coalition. This new international framework is designed to strengthen Europe’s defense against ballistic missiles and pool the defense capabilities of the participating states.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing an official declaration released by the Élysée Palace.
Which countries joined the anti-ballistic coalition
The founding members of the new coalition are:
- Ukraine;
- Denmark;
- France;
- Germany;
- Italy;
- Netherlands;
- Norway;
- Spain;
- Sweden;
- United Kingdom.
In a joint declaration, the leaders emphasized that the decision was a response to the growing threat of ballistic missile use and the need to create a unified European missile defense system.
“We announce the launch of a purely defensive coalition on missile defense,” the document states.
Why is a new missile defense system being created?
The coalition members note that Europe needs an integrated missile defense architecture to complement existing national defense systems.
The plan calls for:
- the development of joint defense capabilities;
- coordination of scientific research;
- cooperation among defense industries;
- the development of common technical standards;
- the establishment of joint operational requirements;
- exchange of technology and information.
The declaration emphasizes that the coalition is exclusively defensive in nature.
“We are doing this not against any nations, but to protect our own,” the participants noted.

Ukraine has become one of the key participants
The leaders of the participating states specifically highlighted Ukraine’s unique combat experience gained while repelling large-scale Russian missile attacks.
It is Ukraine’s experience in using modern air defense and missile defense systems that will form one of the foundations of the future coalition.
The document also provides for the creation of:
- joint technical working groups;
- management mechanisms;
- a roadmap for implementing the project;
- joint research and development programs.
The coalition will be open to new participants
The declaration states that the format is not closed.
Other states may join if they:
- share the coalition’s principles;
- support the development of the European missile defense system;
- are ready to participate in joint defense projects.
Zelenskyy Announced the First Practical Step
On July 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the first meeting dedicated to the implementation of the Ukrainian “Freya” anti-ballistic missile system project would take place in France in the near future.
This project is expected to become one of the key areas of focus for the newly formed coalition.
What the formation of the coalition means
In essence, this marks the beginning of the formation of a unified European missile defense ecosystem.
If the project is implemented, participating countries will benefit from:
- faster exchange of information on missile threats;
- shared intercept technologies;
- coordination of missile defense systems production;
- greater interoperability of national defense systems;
- more effective protection against modern ballistic missiles.
