14 July 07:05

Iran launched a missile strike on two oil tankers from the United Arab Emirates in the Strait of Hormuz. One crew member was killed in the attack, and eight others were injured; among the injured were two Ukrainian citizens.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Reuters.

What is known about the attack

According to the UAE Ministry of Defense, Iranian cruise missiles struck the tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah, which were in the southern part of the Strait of Hormuz within Omani territorial waters.

As a result of the strike:

  • one crew member of the Mombasa was killed;
  • 8 sailors were injured;
  • four of the injured are in critical condition;
  • among the injured are 6 Indian citizens and 2 Ukrainian citizens.

Fires broke out on both tankers, but the crews managed to contain the blazes.

The UAE strongly condemned the attack

The United Arab Emirates authorities called the attack a “blatant assault” and stated that they reserve the right to respond to the escalation in accordance with international law.

Meanwhile, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed it had attacked two vessels that allegedly ignored warnings and attempted to navigate a mined route. Tehran also accused the U.S. of inciting civilian vessels to pass through the dangerous area.

The Strait of Hormuz Has Once Again Become a High-Risk Area

Following the latest escalation between the U.S. and Iran, ship traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped sharply.

According to analysts, the number of tankers passing through the strategic maritime corridor has fallen to its lowest level in the past two months. Some vessels are turning off their Automatic Identification Systems (AIS), and shipping companies are avoiding the route due to heightened security risks.

About one-fifth of the world’s seaborne oil exports pass through the Strait of Hormuz, so any hostilities in the region instantly affect global energy prices and logistics.

The conflict between the U.S. and Iran is escalating

The latest attack came after yet another escalation between Washington and Tehran.

The United States resumed strikes on Iranian military targets in response to attacks against international shipping, and President Donald Trump announced tighter security controls over shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

Further escalation of the conflict could lead to new disruptions in oil supplies and sharp fluctuations in global prices.
