Ukrainian businessman Dmytro Karchuk has returned to Ukraine after spending 2.5 weeks in a Polish detention center. This was reported by [Komersant], citing a post by the businessman on Facebook.

According to Karchuk, the situation surrounding his detention ended just as suddenly as it began. He now plans to investigate the causes of the incident, specifically which documents were involved and how they were used.

“In fact, there’s still a lot to figure out: what this was all about, how and which documents were used, whether it was a coincidence or something else. But now I’m able to take action and will get to the bottom of everything,” he said.

The businessman also shared his own reflections following his time in custody.

“Personally, I learned a lot—about myself, and about a system that keeps people locked up for months, even when their guilt hasn’t been proven,” Karchuk emphasized.

Dmytro Karchuk expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped facilitate his return home, including his wife Valentina Leus, the Ukrainian Consulate in Lublin and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the attorneys at Arzinger Law Office, the team and members of the CEO Club Ukraine community, as well as his friends and loved ones.

What was Karchuk accused of?

Dmytro Karchuk was detained on July 28 at the “Budomierz” border crossing.

German authorities issued a warrant for his arrest based on a European arrest warrant in connection with the theft of 171 electric bicycles worth over 126,000 euros.

According to the German investigation, in 2024, the man allegedly used forged transport documents and posed as an employee of a transport company.

Representatives of the CEO Club Ukraine community had previously suggested that the detention might have been the result of fraud involving the businessman’s personal data.

The perpetrators may have used his documents to obtain and subsequently sell the cargo.
