Drones for the Ukrainian Armed Forces: Ukraine and Norway Launch First Joint UAV Production

27 April 15:32

Ukraine and Norway are establishing their first joint production facility for Ukrainian drones. The plan is to manufacture several thousand mid-strike drones in Norway.

This was reported by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“All products manufactured under the project will be transferred to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The relevant agreement was signed in Kyiv by the Norwegian Ambassador to Ukraine, Lars Ragnar Aalered Hansen, and the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine for European Integration, Serhiy Boev,” the statement reads.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasized that this agreement will allow for the scaling up of production of Ukrainian technologies that have already proven their effectiveness on the battlefield and will strengthen the defense capabilities of both countries.

Norway will finance the production of drones.

“The project will be funded by the Norwegian side using additional funds allocated on top of the previously planned $7 billion in defense support for Ukraine in 2026,” the statement said.

Over $1.5 billion for the purchase of Ukrainian weapons in 2026

This year, Norway plans to allocate a total of over $1.5 billion for the purchase of Ukrainian-made weapons for the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the Ministry of Defense reported.

“Thank you to Norway for its consistent support and focus on precisely those capabilities that Ukraine critically needs. Joint production projects and the guaranteed provision of drones to brigades directly strengthen our forces on the battlefield. Norway gains the opportunity to produce technologies that have proven their effectiveness, while Ukraine receives the drones necessary to seize the initiative on the front lines. This is a true win-win partnership,” said Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov.

First drone deliveries by summer

The first systems manufactured in Norway are expected to be delivered to the Ukrainian Armed Forces as early as this summer.

The agreement also provides for the development of comprehensive industrial cooperation, including research.

“Supporting Ukraine’s fight is the most important thing we do for Norway’s security. This is a partnership that benefits both countries. It is an important and concrete step toward deepening Norwegian-Ukrainian cooperation, which simultaneously strengthens Norway’s defense industry and gives Ukraine the opportunity to manufacture drones under safe conditions on Norwegian territory,” emphasized Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Onshuus Sandvik.

According to him, the experience gained through this project will allow Norway to expand its production capabilities in a critically important area.

As a reminder, on April 14, Ukraine and Norway signed a declaration on defense partnership. According to the document, Norway, among other things, commits to supporting the production of Ukrainian drones, while Ukraine commits to sharing the experience, data, and other information gained with Norway.
