The export price of sunflower oil has risen: what is the reason?

30 April 17:51

Despite the recent rise in oil prices, vegetable oil prices remained stable last week. On the Indian market, sunflower oil prices even fell due to increased supply from Argentina. This was reported by the Electronic Grain Exchange, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Over the course of the week, prices for sunflower oil delivered to India fell by another $10 per ton to $1,410–$1,415 per ton CIF Mumbai. This led to a $10 per ton drop in prices for Russian sunflower oil to $1,315–$1,320 per ton FOB.

At the same time, bid prices for Ukrainian sunflower oil rose by $5–10 per ton to $1,320–1,325 per ton for delivery to Black Sea ports due to a supply shortage.

Over the weekend, another port-side oil extraction plant was damaged by Russian drone strikes, and oil storage tanks were damaged in Chornomorsk. Declining processing margins and new oil losses have led to reduced purchasing activity among some processors.

At the end of last week, demand prices for sunflower seeds in Ukraine reached a record 33,000 hryvnias per ton, but since Monday have fallen by 300–500 hryvnias per ton to 31,800–32,500 hryvnias per ton excluding VAT, delivered to the plant.

According to Ukraine’s State Statistics Service, sunflower production in 2025 totaled 10.24 million tons, which is 7% less than in the previous season. As of April 1, 2026, sunflower stocks in Ukraine stood at 2.6 million tons, which is 10% less than a year ago.

In May 2026, the export duty on sunflower oil from Russia will decrease by 3.5 times compared to April—from 16,222 to 4,650 rubles per ton. This will allow Russian exporters to earn higher profits and lower prices, which will intensify competition on the global market.
