Cherries in Ukraine Have Become Significantly Cheaper: Should We Expect Prices to Drop Further?

21 June 12:14

Cherry season in Ukraine is picking up steam. Prices are finally starting to please shoppers, but in some places, the cost per kilogram is still surprising. RBC-Ukraine reports this, citing a comment by Maksym Hopka, an analyst at the Ukrainian Agribusiness Club (UAC), as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

What Determines the Price of Cherries Right Now

The expert noted that as of mid-June 2026, local cherries in Ukraine are being sold wholesale at a price of about 70–150 hryvnias per kilogram.

According to him, this is, on average, 25–30% cheaper than during the same period in 2025.

Gopka noted that, overall, the decline in cherry prices during this period can be explained by:

  • increased supply (of both imported and Ukrainian cherries);
  • the arrival of the local harvest on the market;
  • high competition among sellers;
  • limited shelf life (since the fruit spoils fairly quickly).

Could cherry prices in Ukraine fall even further?

“The rains in early June had a negative impact on the fruit, making it susceptible to spoilage even before harvest,” the analyst noted.

At the same time, he noted that the price of cherries will most likely “drop further at the peak of the season—in early July.”

“Today, conditions are favorable enough for supply to increase,” the analyst noted.

Where are the cherries coming from, and how much local produce is available?

According to Hopka, Ukrainian cherries “are already starting to appear on store shelves in significant numbers.”

“Currently, the supply consists mainly of early varieties,” he clarified.

Meanwhile, imported cherries are entering the Ukrainian market primarily from Greece.

“Greece provided the bulk of the supply at the start of the season,” the analyst noted.

In addition, he said, early shipments of cherries from Spain ( which were sold at high prices) can be found on store shelves in Ukraine.

Other potential sources of sweet cherries included:

  • Moldova;
  • Turkey;
  • Uzbekistan.

How much do cherries cost at different supermarkets?

As of June 21, 2026, a variety of cherries can be found at the “Silpo” supermarket chain.

The lowest price—for premium cherries—is 139 hryvnias per kilogram.

Meanwhile, just 100 grams of “Konik Zakarpattia” cherries costs nearly 85 hryvnias (the exact price is 84.90). That means a kilogram of these cherries will set you back 849 hryvnias.

Meanwhile, at the VARUS supermarket chain, you’ll actually have to pay 150 hryvnias per kilogram for cherries sold by weight (the exact price is 149.90).

Select loose cherries are even more expensive. They cost nearly 200 hryvnias per kilogram (exact price: 199.90).

So, as we can see, the retail price of cherries in Ukraine can vary significantly.

It depends both on the specific retail chain (a particular grocery supermarket) and on the variety of the fruit or its origin (the source of wholesale purchases).
