A comeback in time of war: is IKEA really coming back to Ukraine?

27 June 2024 15:27

Information that IKEA may return to Ukraine is confirmed. The Swedish manufacturer of budget furniture is already preparing to resume operations, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to a number of media reports, IKEA has already recruited staff, started training them and is even going to book some of them before the launch.

The decision to resume operations was allegedly made back in May. When making this decision, the company took into account the successful return to the country of other brands such as McDonald’s, H&M or Zara.

It is not yet known when exactly the store will open in Kyiv, but the relevant work is underway.

IKEA – Swedish philosophy in bed

IKEA is a Swedish multinational company that specialises in the production and sale of furniture, kitchen appliances and other household goods. Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA has become a world-renowned brand known for its functional, stylish and affordable home furnishings. The company’s philosophy naturally stems from the worldview of most Swedes, who value simple, but cosy and comfortable things in life and do not pursue luxuries.

Thus, IKEA is known for its innovative approach to design and production, focusing on creating furniture that is easy to assemble and transport. This allows IKEA to reduce logistics and storage costs, which in turn makes their products more affordable for consumers. In addition, IKEA is famous for its large warehouse stores, where customers can inspect the furniture samples on display and then pick up the packaged goods themselves.

IKEA also pays great attention to environmental friendliness and sustainable development. The company is actively working to reduce its environmental footprint by using renewable materials and implementing energy-efficient technologies in production and stores. In addition, IKEA offers a range of services, including delivery, furniture assembly and interior design, to provide a comprehensive customer experience.

Over the years, IKEA has expanded its presence around the world, becoming one of the largest furniture companies with hundreds of stores in dozens of countries. Despite its global reach, the company retains its Swedish roots, which is reflected in its product design and product names. IKEA continues to innovate and adapt to the changing needs of consumers, remaining a leader in affordable and stylish home solutions.

IKEA in Ukraine and Russia

The first physical IKEA store in Ukraine was opened on 1 February 2021 in the Kyiv Blockbuster Mall. It was a city format store, smaller than traditional IKEA hypermarkets.

Prior to the opening of the physical store, IKEA launched an online store for Ukrainian consumers in May 2020, which allowed the company to start operating in the Ukrainian market under the then quarantine. The company planned to further expand its presence in Ukraine, including opening full-size stores.

However, after the full-scale Russian invasion, IKEA, like many other international companies, suspended its operations in Ukraine due to security concerns. The company continued to support its Ukrainian employees and participated in humanitarian initiatives to help those affected by the war.

In Russia, the company first suspended its operations after the invasion, and later, in June 2022, announced its complete withdrawal from the Russian market. In 2023, IKEA sold all of its factories in Russia, closed stores and laid off thousands of employees, ending its nearly 30-year presence in the country.
