A wave of bankruptcies in Kyiv: why only 2 out of 10 restaurants survive

The capital is experiencing a large-scale wave of restaurant and cafe closures. Not only new projects are under threat, but also establishments that have been operating on the market for many years. This was reported in an interview with RBC-Ukraine by Olga Nasonova, director of the Restaurants of Ukraine analytical center and restaurant consultant, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

The expert calls the economic situation and the decline in the population’s ability to pay the key factor. Kyiv residents are less likely to visit catering establishments and reduce the average check.

“Even restaurants with high quality service and cuisine often fail to break even,” Nasonova notes.

Only 20% of new establishments can be considered successful

According to the expert, out of ten new restaurants, only two operate steadily and show a profit. Another five operate with minimal margins, while the rest are unprofitable and may cease operations in the near future.

Nasonova predicts that by the end of the year, about 20% of restaurants in the capital may disappear if the situation does not stabilize.

The market has passed the saturation point

Before the pandemic and the outbreak of a full-scale war, the Ukrainian restaurant market was dynamic: demand allowed establishments of different formats and price segments to coexist. Now, according to the expert, “only two successful establishments survive, while the rest either lose money or close.”

Financial pressure on owners is growing

According to Nasonova, most owners tried to keep their businesses going during the crisis, but now the situation is becoming critical. After paying off staff and suppliers, there is no money left over even for minimal profits.
