Klitschko can’t stand it and starts the heating season

29 October 2024 13:20

The head of the Kyiv City State Administration, Vitali Klitschko, announced the start of the heating season in the city on October 30. This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City State Administration with reference to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Earlier it was reported that the heating season will begin when the average daily temperature in the city is no more than 8 ℃ for three consecutive days. So far, no such indicators have been recorded, but something made the mayor of Kyiv change his mind and announce the start of the heating season already. The mayor justifies his decision by saying that weather forecasters are predicting an average daily temperature of 8 degrees for the next few days.

“On October 30, we will start the heating season in Kyiv for the housing stock. This decision was made by the city in view of the further significant cold snap. Given the weather conditions and weather forecasters’ predictions of a significant drop in temperature, the average daily temperature for three days will be below 8 degrees, we will start connecting residential buildings to heat from Wednesday, October 30,”

– klitschko said.

The city needs 7 days to fully deploy the heating system, the mayor said.

Klitschko promised to turn on the heating for social facilities – hospitals, schools, kindergartens, etc. – on October 14.

Threats to the heating season

The main threat to the heating season in 2024-2025 is massive missile and drone strikes by the Russian Armed Forces against critical infrastructure.

“With the start of the heating season, we can expect massive Russian strikes on the energy sector,”

– said Oleksandr Lytvynenko, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council.

He added that the Ukrainian energy sector has shown its ability to implement innovative solutions during the war and, despite everything, the enemy’s intentions to destroy Ukraine’s economy are not achieving their goal.

In his turn, Volodymyr Velychko, Deputy Chairman of the Supervisory Board of PJSC Centrenergo, said that in addition to protecting generating stations, it is necessary to ensure the protection of electrical substations that transmit and distribute electricity generated by power plants. The protection must be of high quality and reliable. Relying on underground substations is utopian. Only modern air defense systems can provide effective protection. The reliability of protection of energy facilities should be at the level of the capital’s protection.

Residents of high-rise buildings may also face problems. Experts explain that in the event of power outages for critical infrastructure, heat may not reach the residents of the upper floors during cold weather.

“During cold weather, the heat may indeed not reach the floors above the ninth floor if there are interruptions in the supply of electricity to critical infrastructure. Because in this case, the pumps will not be properly powered, and in this case, it will be necessary to have additional units to power them. This can become a serious problem during the heating season,”

– predicted Volodymyr Omelchenko, Director of Energy Programs at the Razumkov Center.
