King Charles III Addressed the U.S. Congress in Support of Ukraine: What He Said

29 April 09:38

On Tuesday, April 28,King Charles III of the United Kingdom delivered a speech before both houses of the U.S. Congress in Washington. The British monarch urged the United States not to turn its back on its allies amid geopolitical tensions surrounding Iran and Ukraine, reports "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.

“The challenges we face are too great for any one country to tackle alone,” the publication quotes Charles III as saying.

In the year marking the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence from Great Britain, the king recalled that the partnership between the two countries “was born of a dispute, yet has become strong.”

“I pray from the bottom of my heart that our alliance will continue to defend our shared values <…> and that we will ignore the loud calls to withdraw even further into ourselves,” said the British monarch.

Charles III particularly emphasized that the same resolve seen in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks is now needed to “defend Ukraine and its extraordinarily courageous people—to ensure a truly just and lasting peace.”

This is only the second time in history that a British monarch has addressed the U.S. legislature—the first was a speech delivered by Queen Elizabeth II to Congress in 1991.

Trump has significantly softened his rhetoric toward the UK

Charles III arrived in the United States the day before with his wife, Queen Camilla. U.S. President Donald Trump and his wife Melania welcomed the British royal couple to the White House on April 27. During the formal reception, Trump said that “in the centuries since the United States gained its independence, Americans have had no closer friends than the British.”

The White House chief recalled the “special relationship” between London and Washington—a phrase popularized by Winston Churchill, who led the British government during World War II and in the first half of the 1950s. Trump also praised the British armed forces, noting that the U.S. and the U.K. “fought better together” than any other two countries.

Thus, Trump has significantly softened his rhetoric regarding the UK. Over the past two months, the American president has repeatedly criticized the United Kingdom and other NATO allies for their unwillingness to support the US and Israel in a war with Iran.

Charles III’s visit to the United States will last four days. It is taking place amid heightened security measures following the shooting that occurred on April 25 at a dinner attended by Trump in Washington.
