The IAEA reported a complete power outage at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant overnight: what caused it

3 June 10:14

The Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant was left without external power for about 20 minutes on the night of Wednesday, June 3, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".

“For the 17th time since the start of the military conflict, the Zaporizhzhia NPP was temporarily left without external power supply during the night,” the IAEA said in a statement.

The agency claims that the outage was caused by a drone striking the Nikopol substation, located on the opposite bank of the Dnipro River from the Zaporizhzhia NPP. This led to a temporary shutdown of the sole power line remaining at the facility for about 20 minutes.

The ZNPP’s emergency diesel generators provided power until the line was restored shortly before midnight.

“This incident once again underscores the constant threats to nuclear safety during the war,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.

It should be noted that the situation at the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia NPP remains tense and unstable. The plant continues to be held by Russian troops, with regular reports of provocations, disinformation campaigns, and accusations of drone attacks, which the Ukrainian Defense Forces deny as hostile manipulation.
