According to military officials, the Ukrainian fighter jet was carrying out a combat mission to destroy Russian air targets in the Odesa region.

“According to preliminary data, an abnormal situation occurred during the launch of an air-to-air missile, causing the aircraft to catch fire and the pilot to lose control, even though he tried to save the aircraft,” the Air Force statement said.
What is known about the MiG-29 pilot
The pilot was able to eject from the fighter jet.
He was then transported to a medical facility, where he remains under medical supervision.
The Air Force’s statement contains no information about other casualties.

This is not the first loss of a MiG-29 this summer
In late June, the Air Force had already reported the loss of a MiG-29 fighter jet that was on a combat mission in the Poltava region.
At that time, contact with the aircraft was lost. The pilot successfully ejected, established contact with the search-and-rescue team, and was transported to a medical facility.
In the case in the Odesa region on August 10, the Air Force has already outlined the preliminary circumstances of the incident: an abnormal situation arose during the launch of an air-to-air missile, after which the fighter caught fire and became uncontrollable.
