Mikhail Fedorov is traveling to the U.S. to seek funding for defense projects — media reports

Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov plans to visit the United States next week, his press office told “Suspilne,” according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

“The main goal of the potentially planned trip is to secure funding for new projects in the field of defense tech,” the public broadcaster quoted Fedorov’s representatives as saying.

However, Suspilne’s sources did not specify exactly which projects are involved, who instructed the former minister to seek resources for them, or in what capacity he is acting.

Meanwhile, the British newspaper The Guardian speculated that the trip is linked to efforts to secure Washington’s support for holding elections in Ukraine.

However, Reuters, citing sources, refuted this report.

According to the source, Fedorov will not meet with politicians or officials during his visit to the U.S.

“Fedorov plans to launch a series of projects related to the war and Ukrainian startups,” Reuters quoted its source as saying.

According to the source, one of the projects will be an investment fund.

Fedorov has close ties to American companies such as SpaceX and Palantir, the agency notes.

The source clarified that the former minister is continuing negotiations with Elon Musk regarding Starlink, but no meeting between them is currently scheduled.

As a reminder, Mykhailo Fedorov, who had been one of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s closest allies since the 2019 presidential campaign, was unexpectedly dismissed in mid-July of this year along with the entire cabinet of Yulia Svyrydenko. After several weeks of negotiations with the president, he ultimately did not receive the desired position of defense minister in Prime Minister Serhiy Koretsky’s new cabinet. Earlier this week, Fedorov issued a statement alleging corruption at the highest levels of government and called for elections.

Also, as reported by [Komersant], Mykhailo Fedorov received an exemption from mobilization through the “Eastern Europe” Charitable Foundation. This occurred on July 18, three days after his dismissal as defense minister.

The “Eastern Europe” Foundation is a nonprofit organization that has been operating in Ukraine since 2008 and implements projects funded by international donors.
