Potato Prices Are Falling in Ukraine: Key Factors
21 August 14:28
For the second week in a row, potato prices on the Ukrainian market have continued to fall. According to analysts at EastFruit, the main reason for this trend is the large-scale harvest in the main production regions and, as a result, an increase in potato supplies to the market, writes "Komersant Ukrainian".
As of today, potatoes from Ukrainian farms are being offered for sale at 6–12 UAH/kg ($0.13–0.29/kg), which is on average 14% cheaper than at the end of last week.
The main reason for the decline in potato prices is the so-called seasonal factor, as the supply of this product on the market increases practically every day. At the same time, demand in this segment is characterized as below average, which also puts downward pressure on potato prices.
It is worth noting that, at present, potato prices in Ukraine are already, on average, 37% lower than during the same period last year. At the same time, market participants are quite pessimistic. According to them, given the country’s relatively large potato production volumes, there is little reason to expect prices to rise in the near future.
