22 August 14:09
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful arrived in Kyiv on Saturday, August 22, the Foreign Ministry reported. The German foreign minister’s visit comes on the eve of Ukraine’s Independence Day, which is celebrated on August 24, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
“As Ukraine marks the 35th anniversary of its independence, it is very important to me personally to see the situation on the ground with my own eyes and to speak with as many people as possible from different walks of life, — about how Germany, as Ukraine’s key partner in Europe, can provide targeted support,” said Wadephul.
The minister noted that “July and August—the summer vacation months, usually the best time of year for people across Europe—have become the deadliest months for Ukraine’s civilian population in the last four years.”

On the agenda: Ukraine’s preparations for the coming winter
During his visit, the German Foreign Minister plans to discuss with Ukrainian authorities the details of the country’s preparations for attacks on its infrastructure this winter. Wadeful noted that, together with his French counterpart Jean-Noël Barro, he has already written to “numerous countries” requesting assistance for Ukraine during the winter.
At the same time, the politician emphasized that Germany has become “Ukraine’s most important ally and supporter in economic and political matters” and that this is a two-way street. “This will continue to be the case, and that is what I wanted to emphasize with my visit,” Wadepul said.
Another expected topic of discussion will be the deepening of cooperation between the two countries in the areas of security and defense.
Wadeful’s fourth visit to Ukraine as minister
This year’s visit to Ukraine was Wadeful’s fourth since May 2025, when he took office. The trip was not announced in advance for security reasons.
