Despite the fires: Tuapse promises not to cancel the tourist season
3 May 22:12
Tuapse has no plans to cancel this summer’s resort season, said Sergey Boyko, head of the Tuapse Municipal District in Krasnodar Krai, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
“Of course, there will be a season. Our district has a coastline of about 90 km. What happened on one beach will in no way affect the other beaches,” Boiko said on the “Solovyov Live” program.
In addition, he promised to “restore” the Tuapse beach, which was damaged by Ukrainian Armed Forces strikes on oil infrastructure, by June 1. The official stated that the city has not recorded any “abnormal surge in calls to ambulances or hospital admissions” due to the oil spill, while intelligence agencies are informing authorities about “Western TV companies and Western bloggers” who are allegedly spreading false information about the situation in Tuapse.
On April 27, Yevgeny Vitishko, an ecologist and head of the permanent working group on ecology under the Council for the Development of Civil Society attached to the Governor of the Krasnodar Region, told the publication “Kommersant-Sochi” that the area of pollution in the Black Sea near Tuapse had exceeded 70 kilometers. Vitishko assessed the likelihood of cleaning up the oil spill by the start of the summer season as unlikely.
Four Ukrainian Armed Forces attacks on the Tuapse maritime terminal
On the night of April 30, a fire broke out at the Tuapse marine terminal following an attack by Ukrainian drones. Prior to this, Ukrainian UAVs had struck oil facilities in Tuapse three times—on the nights of April 16, April 20, and April 28.

On April 22, oil combustion products fell on the city along with the rain. Residents of several neighborhoods were advised to limit their time outdoors and keep their windows closed. On April 29, Rospotrebnadzor detected benzene concentrations in the air exceeding permissible limits near the burning refinery—though lower than during the fire on April 20.
On April 28, a regional-level state of emergency (SOE) was declared throughout the Tuapse Municipal District. On the same day, the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations reported a spill of petroleum products onto a road in Tuapse. The Telegram channel Astra specified that burning petroleum products had spilled onto Koshkina Street in the eastern part of the city. They likely leaked from damaged tanks at the Tuapse Oil Refinery, where heavy fractions such as fuel oil are stored. The next day, Russian Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov announced that the oil spill had been stopped.
Russian dictator Vladimir Putin commented on the situation in Tuapse only after the third attack, acknowledging the potential environmental risks but adding, according to the regional governor, that “there are no serious threats.”
