Commemorative coin marking the Chernobyl disaster is now in circulation: what is known about the NBU’s new release

The National Bank of Ukraine has issued a commemorative coin titled “To Those Who Saved the World: 40 Years Since the Chernobyl Disaster,” dedicated to the liquidators of the Chernobyl accident. The coin was officially put into circulation on April 24, 2026, on the eve of the 40th anniversary of the largest man-made disaster in the history of nuclear energy. This was reported by the NBU, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
What coin was issued for the 40th anniversary of Chernobyl
The new commemorative coin from the NBU has a face value of 5 hryvnias. It is made of nickel silver, belongs to the “Other Coins” series, and has a “special uncirculated” minting quality. The announced mintage is up to 50,000 pieces in souvenir packaging.
The NBU’s numismatic product catalog also lists the coin’s technical specifications: its weight is 16.54 g, and its diameter is 35 mm.

The coin’s name—“To Those Who Saved the World”—clearly indicates that it is dedicated to the people who participated in the cleanup of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident. These include firefighters, military personnel, medical workers, engineers, construction workers, scientists, and other cleanup workers who labored following the explosion at the fourth power unit.

What the NBU’s new coin for the Chernobyl anniversary looks like
Design features:
Reverse: the word “PAIN,” symbolizing the suffering and consequences of the disaster, as well as the collective memory of the event.
Obverse: a stylized inscription “CHORNOB,” where the first two letters form the number “40,” symbolizing the 40th anniversary of the tragedy. The unfinished letter “B” transitions into the reverse side of the composition.

Where to purchase the coin
The National Bank states that the commemorative coin “To Those Who Saved the World. 40 Years Since the Chernobyl Disaster” was put into circulation on April 24, 2026. This date is specified both in the circulation section and in the NBU’s numismatic product catalog.
The NBU notes that the coin is a numismatic product sold through the NBU’s online store and distributor banks. The coin has already appeared in the catalog as a separate item in souvenir packaging.
The coin has been included in the 2026 Plan for the Issuance of Commemorative and Investment Coins of Ukraine, which also specifies its denomination, metal, minting quality category, and a mintage of up to 50,000 pieces.
