Following his dismissal from the Ukrainian national team, Serhiy Rebrov may continue his coaching career in Greece by taking the helm of the country’s 20-time champion, Panathinaikos. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Newsit.
Panathinaikos’ interest in Rebrov
“Rebrov has once again appeared on the list of candidates for the position of Panathinaikos coach. The Ukrainian specialist is now a free agent on the coaching market, and the Athens-based club may consider his candidacy as early as this summer,” a source said.
Currently, the Greek club is dissatisfied with the work of renowned Spanish coach Rafa Benítez, who may soon be fired. Panathinaikos is in fourth place in the Greek league. They are already 16 points behind the leader, AEK.
The Ukrainian coach had previously been linked with the Athens club, but at that time he decided to focus on his work with the national team, and the Greeks were led by star coach Rafael Benitez.
As a reminder, before taking over the Ukrainian national team, the 51-year-old Rebrov managed Dynamo, Al-Ahli, Ferencváros, and Al-Ain. In total, he has won ten trophies throughout his coaching career.
Rebrov’s Resignation
Serhiy Rebrov has stepped down as head coach of the Ukrainian national team. The coach and the leadership of the Ukrainian Football Association decided to end their collaboration by mutual agreement. Rebrov spent nearly three years in the position. He had been working with the “blue-and-yellows” since June 2023.
Rebrov’s squad failed to qualify for the World Cup in North America. The team’s tournament run ended in the semifinal of the qualifying playoffs, where the national team lost to Sweden (1-3).
“We thank Serhiy Stanislavovych for his work and his contribution to the development of young footballers. Today, we need to move forward and make new decisions that will lay the foundation for the national team’s future,” commented UAF President Andriy Shevchenko on the resignation.
Rebrov will remain on the association’s staff. He holds the position of UAF vice president. He also remains a member of the organization’s executive committee.
