After grain, it’s milk and chicken: Ukraine is opening up yet another major African market for farmers
30 July 08:20
Ukraine continues to open new foreign markets for its agricultural products. Following the approval of exports of milk and cattle, the Ukrainian side is working to secure market access to Algeria for two more important categories of goods— milk powder and poultry meat. This was reported by the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The expansion of cooperation was discussed during a meeting attended by First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food Taras Vysotsky, Algerian Ambassador to Ukraine Ahmed Ouail, representatives of the State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection, and the Ukrainian Dairy Industry Association.
Which Ukrainian products could enter the Algerian market
One of the key outcomes of the negotiations was an agreement to conduct an inspection mission by Algerian experts at a Ukrainian enterprise that produces powdered milk.
Once the inspection is complete and the production facilities are confirmed to be compliant, the parties plan to begin exporting Ukrainian powdered milk to Algeria.
At the same time, work is underway to open the market for Ukrainian poultry meat.
Ukraine has already provided the Algerian side with:
- veterinary requirements;
- product access procedures;
- drafts of international certificates.
The Ukrainian side is currently awaiting an official response from the competent authorities in Algeria.

Which Products Are Already Approved for Export
As of today, Ukraine and Algeria have agreed on four veterinary certificates allowing the export of:
- milk and dairy products;
- cattle for slaughter;
- cattle for fattening;
- breeding cattle.
The approval of these veterinary documents is a mandatory requirement for Ukrainian products to enter a new foreign market.
Ukraine is expanding its presence in the North African market
Algeria is one of the largest food importers in North Africa and an important partner for Ukraine in agricultural trade.
Ukraine had previously resumed corn shipments to this country after a three-year hiatus, demonstrating its ability to fulfill international contracts even amid wartime conditions.
Expanding the product range could increase Ukrainian producers’ presence in the Algerian market and diversify export shipments.
Ukraine is actively opening new export markets
According to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy, in the first half of 2026 alone, Ukraine agreed on 23 new export destinations and trade terms for the supply of agricultural products.
Efforts to open new markets are ongoing not only with Algeria but also with other countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The government expects that expanding export markets will help support Ukrainian producers and strengthen the country’s economy amid the war.
