There will be no beach season in Kyiv: the City Defense Council has decided

29 April 05:55

In 2026, Kyiv will not officially open the beach season. This decision was made by the capital’s Defense Council amid martial law. At the same time, access to beaches will not be restricted, and municipal services will continue to prepare recreational areas near the water, clean the grounds, and monitor water quality. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Life.Kyiv.

According to the publication, the city acknowledges that Kyiv residents and visitors will still spend time near bodies of water, so the main focus will be on safety, sanitary control, and the work of rescue services.

Why the beach season in Kyiv will not open

The official beach season in the capital will not open due to security risks associated with martial law. Restrictions on the swimming season have been in place in Kyiv for several years: as far back as 2023, the City Defense Council decided not to open the swimming season in the capital, and this practice has continued in subsequent years.

The main reason is the danger to people in the event of an air raid alert. There are often not enough shelters nearby on beaches and near bodies of water, and large crowds can complicate evacuation and emergency response efforts.

Will access to beaches be closed?

There are no plans to completely close access to beaches in Kyiv. People will be able to visit bodies of water, but there will be no official opening of the swimming season.

Municipal services will continue to prepare beach areas for the summer. This includes cleaning the shoreline, conducting sanitary inspections, renewing the sand, and implementing measures to reduce water stagnation in bodies of water.

What will be operating at the beaches

Despite the absence of an official start to the season, part of the beach infrastructure will remain operational. Lifeguards will be on duty at major locations to respond to emergencies.

Also planned:

  • regular cleaning of the areas;
  • sanitary inspections;
  • water quality monitoring;
  • sand condition checks;
  • measures to prevent accidents;
  • cleaning of the shoreline;
  • removal of excess vegetation in water bodies.

According to Pavlo Ivanov, Director of the Kyiv City State Administration’s Department of Environmental Protection, the city will focus on basic comfort and safety, even if there is no official beach season.

Kyiv plans to restore water bodies

The decision not to open the beach season is linked not only to safety risks but also to a shift in approach to environmental policy. In 2026, Kyiv identified the restoration of water bodies as one of its priorities.

Comprehensive revitalization is planned for five areas:

Water bodyWhat is planned
Lake SoniachneAnalysis of water quality, selection of purification methods
Yordanske LakeChemical and biological restoration
Desenka Bayimprovement of the aquatic environment
Lake Berizkarevitalization and ongoing monitoring
Water body on Dankevych Streetcleaning and monitoring of results

The work involves water quality analysis, selection of necessary agents, chemical and biological treatment methods, and subsequent monitoring of results.

What this means for Kyiv residents

In essence, the decision means that the beaches will remain accessible as recreational areas, but the city does not recommend treating them as officially open swimming areas. Visitors should pay attention to air raid sirens, not ignore warnings from lifeguards, and avoid swimming in areas where there is no permission or safe conditions.

It is also important to follow announcements from city authorities regarding water quality. Even if a beach is clean and lifeguards are on duty, this does not always mean that swimming there is recommended.
