MP Stepan Kubiv has died: what he is known for

Stepan Kubiv, a member of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine during its 7th–9th convocations, a member of the “European Solidarity” faction, former First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economic Development and Trade of Ukraine, and former head of the National Bank of Ukraine, died on Monday, May 18, at the age of 64. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
“The leadership of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the People’s Deputies, and the leadership and staff of the Parliamentary Secretariat express their condolences on the death of Stepan Kubiv, a People’s Deputy of Ukraine of the ninth convocation… During his time in the Verkhovna Rada, Stepan Kubiv was a member of the Committee on Economic Development. May his memory live on,” the Ukrainian parliament’s website states.
Kubiv, born in 1962, worked in the banking sector before his political career, headed Kredobank, and served as a member of the board of the Ukrainian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the supervisory board of two universities. He was a public figure and the author of dozens of academic works, holding a Ph.D. in Economics. During the Revolution of Dignity, Kubiv served as commander of the Kyiv House of Trade Unions. He was the head of the Vasyl Stus Memorial Ukrainian Voluntary Cultural, Educational, Human Rights, and Charitable Society.
From 2006 to 2012, Kubiv served as a deputy of the Lviv Regional Council, initially representing the “Our Ukraine” faction, and later leading the “Front for Change” faction. In 2012, he was first elected as a People’s Deputy of Ukraine from the All-Ukrainian Union “Batkivshchyna” and served on the party’s political council. In 2014, he became head of the National Bank of Ukraine. That same year, he became a member of the Ukrainian Parliament representing the Petro Poroshenko Bloc and served as the president’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada of the 8th convocation.
How his colleagues reacted
Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada Ruslan Stefanchuk wrote:
“It is with deep sorrow that I received the tragic news of the sudden death of my colleague, People’s Deputy of Ukraine Stepan Kubiv. His experience and contributions will forever remain in the history of our country,” he wrote.
The “European Solidarity” faction called his death a great loss:
“Stepan Kubiv was not only a colleague in parliament but also a true comrade-in-arms in the struggle for the Ukrainian state, for national memory, and for Ukraine’s European future,” the faction’s statement reads.
The leadership of the Verkhovna Rada, members of parliament, and the Verkhovna Rada staff expressed their condolences to his family and loved ones.
