Officials’ disregard for the fact that a child is in an environment that is dangerous to their is one of the main causes of the spread of tragic incidents involving children. Officials should be punished not only after a child’s death or injury, but also for inaction that could have led to a tragedy. Pavlo Sushko, a member of parliament and chairman of the Verkhovna Rada’s Temporary Investigative Commission on the Protection of Children’s Rights, made this statement in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".

According to the MP, for many years, only those who directly committed a crime against a child. At the same time, officials who had a real opportunity to prevent the tragedy often went unpunished punishment.

“Today, charges are being filed not only against those who committed crimes, but also against those who acted negligently. These are the child welfare services. When not only the mother who committed the crime takes the stand, but also the agency that knew about it yet failed to act—that is what drives compliance with the law,” he says.

He cited the Kyiv region as an example. According to the lawmaker, following
a meeting of the parliamentary commission on the protection of children’s rights and inspections, 21 children were removed from dangerous households in just three days.

“Just three days after our meetings, 21 children were removed from dangerous environments,” he stated.

The system must operate proactively, says the MP. If a child is in danger, government agencies must respond before a tragedy occurs, Sushko concluded.
