Putin was briefed on Zelenskyy’s letter: what the Kremlin said

5 June 13:11

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin hasalready been briefed on the letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This was stated by the Russian leader’s press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Russian propaganda media.

“He was briefed on the letter,” said the Kremlin representative.

Peskov did not elaborate on Putin’s reaction to the message. At the same time, the head of state’s press secretary noted that the letter did not arrive through official channels of communication, as Russia does not have such channels with Ukraine.

The day before, an open letter from Zelenskyy was published on the Ukrainian president’s website, in which he appealed to Putin to set a date for a personal meeting. The Ukrainian leader noted that this must be done “honestly and with dignity, and with a guarantee that there will be no new escalation of the war.”

Direct negotiations—Ukraine’s goal

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine does not want a permanent war and proposes ending it through direct negotiations at the level of state leaders.

“Ukraine proposes ending the war through talks between us and you. I propose a meeting with you,” he said, calling for a specific date to be set for such a meeting.

According to the President of Ukraine, such a meeting could be hosted by Switzerland, Turkey, or countries in the Arab world.

“Everyone heard how your representatives, smiling, said that I could supposedly come to Moscow. But after 26 years like this, a Ukrainian leader has nothing to do in your capital, just as a Russian leader has nothing to do in Kyiv,” Zelenskyy explained.

He also believes that the U.S. and Europe should be involved in the negotiation process as potential security guarantors.

“We heard that you were promised in Alaska a resolution of certain issues concerning Ukraine and Europe. But you see that Ukrainian and European issues are not resolved in Anchorage. Other designated participants can join the bilateral track we have initiated,” the president said.

Zelenskyy emphasized that key issues must be resolved by the leaders of the states themselves, not by technical groups or mediation mechanisms.

Ceasefire during negotiations is a final condition

Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine is ready for a complete ceasefire during the negotiations.

“Ukraine is ready to implement a complete ceasefire for the duration of the negotiations,” he wrote. According to him, the United States could monitor the ceasefire along the line of contact. He also emphasized that “the front line is now the line from which diplomacy must begin.”

The president also noted that Ukraine is ready to exchange prisoners of war on an “all for all” basis. Additionally, he called for the return of civilians, including children, who were taken away during the war.

At the end of the letter, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will continue to fight for its existence if Russia refuses to end the war.

“You can stop your war,” wrote the President of Ukraine.

Earlier, Peskov, commenting on Zelenskyy’s letter, stated that the Kremlin had already seen the document. The press secretary said that he himself had already reviewed the text, but the Russian leader had not seen it because he was answering questions from the heads of international news agencies at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
